Best Practice in Laboratory Medicine Award, ASLM2018

The deadline for accepting nominations is Friday, 30 November 2018.

The ASLM2018 Best Practice in Laboratory Medicine Award seeks to promote and recognise a sustained laboratory improvement/best practice leading to tangible and replicable outcomes for enhanced quality in laboratory systems and patient care. Nominations from any resource-limited setting are acceptable, including from outside Africa.

Nominations for the Best Practice Award should include the following documented evidence as criteria for submission:

Contributes towards improvement in outcomes for laboratory medicine in areas like diagnosis, surveillance, turn-around time, quality assurance, referral systems, biosafety or biosecurity, receiving specimens, developing guidelines, contribution to policy, or other improvement projects.
Nominated practice is the best way, one of the best ways, or a proven way to achieve or contribute toward achieving the improvement in outcomes for laboratory medicine (which is replicable and worthy of adoption by others).
Has tangible positive impact, or the practice captured improvement in a newly introduced method over a course of time in comparison to the baseline data.
If applicable, illustrates the use of quality assurance (including compliance self-assessment) methods and/or continuous quality improvement principles to develop, check, or prove that a practice is the best practice.
Practice is replicable and can be (or has been) widely adopted or adapted.
Demonstrates leadership by example.

PRACTICE: What is the best practice that you are nominating for this award and what is its origin? Please describe briefly any events that led to the redesign of an existing or the establishment of this new practice. (If applicable, provide flowcharts, diagrams, etc. note the institutions at which it is currently being used.)*

COMPLIANCE: What accreditation criteria, or institutional/national policies does the practice satisfy or address?*

IMPROVEMENT: How does the practice achieve or contribute toward the improvement of a laboratory process and/or system? Describe the evidence that the practice actually improves the outcomes of laboratory medicine.*

INNOVATION: In what ways, if any, is the practice innovative? (e.g., explain how it provides a novel way of meeting an accreditation requirement.)*

IMPLEMENTATION: How successfully has the practice been implemented and replicated? What types of institutions could adopt or adapt this practice? Describe what efforts, if any, are being or have been made to disseminate the practice and/or to provide technical assistance to other institutions interested in adopting or adapting it. If applicable, describe the required circumstances (e.g., institutional environment) and personnel, financial, and other resources necessary to replicate (i.e., plan, establish, implement, and monitor) the practice at another institution.*
