Professor Souleymane Mboup (PharmD, PhD) studied at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar and the University of Tours in France. As a former student at the Senegalese Military Health Training Academy, he also holds the title of Colonel in the Senegalese armed forces.

His career spans more than 35 years and has been dedicated to HIV-related research and lecturing at the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar and partner universities across the world. Owing to his passion for collaborative research, he and a research team discovered the HIV-2 virus.

He has held several high profile positions and has been a member of several scientific societies in Senegal and internationally. He is the author of more than 200 publications and 18 books, and he has acted as an International Projects Review Expert and Principal Investigator on several research projects.

His experience, knowledge and availability, have credited him with several awards and honours such as:

  • 1st Award of the African AIDS Society (SAA), Dakar 1991
  • Arthur Houghton Jr. Star Crystal Award (African American Institute), United Nations, New York, 2 November 1994
  • 1st Award of the French National Academy of Pharmacy for “Francophone Pharmacy”, Paris, 6 December 2000
  • Award El fasi (Francophone Universities), Louvain La Neuve, Belgium, 2004 among others…

To perpetuate his expertise and know-how, Professor Mboup has initiated the construction of a new research institute called IRESSEF (Institut de Recherche en Santé, de Surveillance Epidémiologique et de Formations), which was officially launched by His Excellency Macky Sall, President of Senegal on 19 June 2017. The wish of Professor Mboup is to build this new institute into a modern platform for the promotion of high quality research and training in Africa.
